Day 13

I woke up early, excited for the day to come. This would be my first day off, a much-needed day of relaxation, although it’s hard to say how much relaxation there would be while rafting through the rapids at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. With only one pair of shoes, I dressed in my typical clothes: a t-shirt, jeans, and motorcycle boots, but I added the rain suit bought a couple of days earlier. I headed out into the lobby where I saw a group of people waiting for a bus. Since the rafting tour left from the hotel, I was thinking this was my group until woman standing behind the reception counter called me over.

“Because of the weather, we’re going to have to cancel the rafting trip for the day,” she told me. I looked outside. It was cloudy but…wait. Was that, snow? It was. Large, wet flakes too, just starting to accumulate on the vehicles outside.

I motioned to the group waiting for the bus. “What are they doing?” I asked.

“They’re locals, going to the celebration for the anniversary of Grand Canyon West at the Skywalk,” she responded. “Concerning your rafting trip,” she continued, “we can give you a refund, or we can reschedule you for tomorrow.”

I thought about my schedule. Could I lose an extra day? Most of my trip was flexible, but I did have one reservation on the 6th of May that couldn’t be rescheduled. Then again, when else would I be able to do something like this? I chose to reschedule, then went back to my room to change out of my rain suit. Seemed like I’d get my day of rest after all.
